Video Instructions
Objective:
The objective of Liar's Dice is to deceive your opponents about the number of dice with a specific value in play and be the last player with dice remaining.
Materials:
- 5 dice for each player.
- 1 Gold cup for Champion of Previous Game
- 1 Barrel to store discarded and unused dice.
Setup:
- Each player receives five dice.
- The champion of the previous game receives the gold cup and must roll their dice with the cup.
- All players shake their dice inside their hands or cup to conceal the rolls from opponents and place them on the table concealing their dice.
- The gold cup is given to the previous game winner to roll their dice in.
Gameplay:
Bidding Round: Players take turns in a clockwise order, starting with the first player. In each turn, a player makes a bid regarding the total number of dice showing a specific value (e.g., "There are four 4s in play"). The three options for subsequent players are Raising, Call Bluff, Call Spot on.
Raising: The next player can raise the bid (e.g., "There are five 4s in play" or “There are four 6s in play”). Like the bid, the player indicates there are at least a certain number of dice of a specific side showing on the table.
- - On a bet of four 4’s, a valid raise may be (four 5’s, four 6’s), or a higher number of any value (five 1’s, five 4s, etc).
- - A raise of four 3s, or four 4s is not valid on a bet of four 4s.
Call bluff: If a player calls “bluff”, all players reveal their dice.
-for a bluff call, If the table has at least the number of dice showing on the table as the challenged bid, the challenging player loses one die. If the table has less dice showing than the challenged bid, the player who made the incorrect bid loses one die.
Call Spot On: If a player calls “spot on”, all players reveal their dice.
-If the player calls “spot on” and the table has exactly the number of dice showing of the previous bid, no one loses a dice and the player who called spot on begins the bid for the next round. If the table shows either less or more of the specific spot on, the player who called spot on loses a dice.
The person who lost the dice, or correctly calls “Spot On” starts the next round.
Winning the Game: The game continues until only one player has dice remaining. Alternatively, you can play for a set number of rounds and declare the player with the most dice remaining as the winner at the end of those rounds. Liar's Dice is a game of skill, bluffing, and strategy. Remember to play fair, but don't be afraid to deceive your opponents to gain an advantage.
Remember to ensure the winner rolls their dice within the Gold Cup.
Variations:
- The most common variation rule all over the world is that 1’s are wild.
- A Germanic variant called Snyd is played where only the loosing player keeps their dice and all other players give up 1 dice. The goal of Snyd is not so much to be the winner, but to not be the looser. This game has a drinking variant where if you loose two games in a row, you must buy the whole table a round of drinks.
- Straits count as wild if all your remaining dice form a straight, they can count for any number.
- Starting bids can be placed to determine who pays out in the end of the round.
- Doubles mod: (e.g., two 3s count as two 3s or as four 3s.
- Penalties (such as take a drink) may be determined for when player loses their dice.
- One common rule is any dice dropped or rolled off the table, it is considered a lost dice.
- Hand signals can be used if the venue is too noisy or no talking is allowed.
- If you would like to add a variation to these rules, leave an Amazon review with the variation in the review for it will be added to this section.
